Looking back, I’ve realized that I don’t usually struggle with learning new concepts themselves—I struggle when the names, categories, or mental models behind those concepts feel inconsistent. My brain naturally tries to build an internally coherent system where names accurately reflect their meanings and related ideas fit together logically. When terminology feels arbitrary or conflicts with an existing meaning, I experience a surprising amount of internal friction before the concept can fully “click.”

I first noticed this as a child while learning physics in Indonesian. The word gaya already meant “style” in everyday language, yet in physics it meant “force.” Although I eventually learned the concept, I remember spending months mentally reconciling the mismatch between the familiar meaning of the word and its scientific meaning. Looking back, I suspect I might have found the subject easier if I had learned it in English first, where the word “force” naturally matches the concept being taught.

The same pattern appeared years later when I began using macOS. I didn’t simply need to memorize different keyboard shortcuts—I found myself questioning the terminology itself. “Command” and “Control” sounded too similar while representing roles that differed from my Windows experience, creating unnecessary ambiguity in my mind. Instead of repeatedly translating Apple’s terminology, I instinctively built a more meaningful internal model with names like “Clovermand,” “Roof,” and “Sloption.” While playful, these names reduced ambiguity and allowed the concepts to become intuitive much more quickly.

I’ve come to realize that this isn’t really about language or operating systems. It’s a reflection of how I learn. My brain treats names as part of the structure of knowledge rather than as arbitrary labels. Before something becomes intuitive, I want the underlying system to feel internally consistent. Once that structure exists, learning becomes remarkably fast and durable. In many ways, I don’t simply memorize information—I reorganize it until it makes sense.


Understanding this about myself has also helped me understand one of my parenting instincts. I often introduce my son to new ideas long before he is expected to master them—not because I expect him to become an expert early, but because I want his first encounter with a concept to feel familiar rather than intimidating. Whether it’s English, hiragana, katakana, kanji, mathematics, or other foundational ideas, my goal is to gently plant seeds over time.

For example, his English is far from fluent, and that’s perfectly fine. What matters to me is that English is no longer a completely foreign concept. By the time formal English lessons begin at school, he’ll already recognize many sounds, words, and patterns. Even though he’ll likely experience some of the phonetic challenges common for children educated primarily in Japanese, he’ll be approaching the subject from a place of familiarity rather than starting from zero.

Perhaps this philosophy comes from my own experiences with learning. I remember how much energy it sometimes took just to overcome the initial conceptual friction before real learning could begin. If I can make that first encounter a little gentler for my children—replacing surprise with curiosity and unfamiliarity with recognition—then I feel I’ve given them a meaningful head start, regardless of how quickly they eventually master the subject.
